Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry, without a contract and still under a franchise tag, can literally walk into the Chiefs’ facility just a few day prior to the start of the regular season and not miss out on any of his $10.8 million salary.
Under the terms of his tag, that’s what he may do, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He can’t be fined if he decides to got that route.
There is always the concern that the Chiefs could get fed up and rescind the tag, writes PFT’s Mike Florio:
‘…something Chiefs coach Andy Reid did not once but twice during his time with the Eagles. Doing so would make Berry a free agent, and he would be hard pressed to get a deal on the open market that averages $10.8 million per year.’
Not having signed his franchise tender, Chiefs’ Eric Berry is expected to miss most, if not all, of preseason. Expected back before opener.
