Although there are no specific details, the physical New England Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower took when visiting the Jets nixed a would-be contract offer that would’ve made him the highest paid LB in the league.
After a visit with Pittsburgh, Hightower took a 4-year $43.5 million (max) offer to re-sign with his old team.
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets reportedly offered him a 5-year, $55.0 million dollar deal that would max out at $62.5 million if all incentives were met (game time, Pro Bowl distinctions, etc.)
The offer was pulled after an “uncomfortable” feeling came over New York’s front office soon after physical results came in.
Whatever scared the Jets off is a mystery, but New England knows his injury history and still felt comfortable in re-signing him.
