Excess baggage: Payton says Peterson trade was ‘common sense’

Truth be told, it just wasn’t working out for Adrian Peterson as a member of the New Orleans Saints.

Maybe it was a bad fit, or maybe we can all put a fork in the aging RB…

Whatever the case may be, the Saints didn’t need him, and on Tuesday jumped at the opportunity to send him to Arizona for a 2018 draft pick.

“This was done just using common sense, and we had a chance to get a draft pick next year,” Payton said, per Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune. “I know Arizona was short at this position, and there’s a confidence level we have with how Mark and how Alvin are playing.”

And with that, Payton sold the Cardinals on Peterson, who had ran the ball just 27 times for 81 over four games – hardly the AP of old.

“In my discussions yesterday with (GM) Steve Keim, it was like, ‘Hey, this guy still has it, and here’s what he does well and we’ve seen it,'” Payton said. “it’s just a little crowded right now.”
